Subject: Remembering Jimmy Carter, An Important History Lesson

Even if you choose not to open the url's entire article (link located at the end of this article), the portion at the top certainly sheds some light on how we got into this mortgage mess.

ALL - I'm sending this around as a matter of interest to those of us interested in good government. Copies have also been sent to some members of the press, not for publication, but on the basis of "need to know".

The first part of the editorial addresses the disastrous administration of Jimmy Carter; but the second half contains information that our mainstream press has apparently forgotten: the fact that Carter's 1977 Community Reinvestment Act , passed by a Democrat Congress, "mandated” that banks meet the credit needs of the entire community. This was the beginning of low-interest loans to low-income families, which for quite a few years was beneficial. However, in 1995, Bill Clinton imposed even stronger regulations that "coerced banks to increase loans to low-income, poverty area borrowers or face fines and restrictions ..." In 1997, good loans were packaged with poor ones and sold as prime packages. Thus, we have the start of the subprime mortgage mess, and we are suddenly learning that it wasn't "Bush's Fault" after all.

The article ends with the comment that "the party of Carter and Clinton that mid-wifed our mortgage mess now wants to be trusted to take over and run our entire health care system. Beware !!"

While it is obvious that Investor's Business Daily is a conservative publication, it is also obvious to me that many of our economic, national security, and defense woes can be traced back to policies, or lack thereof, of the Democrat party, which is now asking us to trust an inexperienced, ultra-liberal Presidential candidate who has no plans to solve punishing problems other than with HOPE and CHANGE.
